xAI's Modified Boeing 747 Engines Pollute, Sparking Local Complaints

Eight modified General Electric turbines at xAI's Colossus 2 data center emit high levels of pollutants, worrying local residents.

The eight turbines, formerly used on Boeing 747 and 767 aircraft, were modified by ProEnergy to produce up to 50 MW each, with a combined power of 400 MW. This installation is preferred over connecting to the grid, which can take years. However, the modification has led to increased emissions, with the permit allowing for higher levels of carbon monoxide and volatile organic compounds.

The Southern Environmental Law Center is contesting the permit, arguing that xAI underestimated the emissions and failed to meet certain limits. The organization also criticizes the use of reconditioned Boeing engines, which emit more pollutants than newer turbines.

The data center, which has 57 turbines, is expected to emit 2,500 tonnes of nitrogen oxides and 4,000 tonnes of carbon monoxide per year, according to Reuters. Local residents have also complained about the constant noise from the turbines, with some even launching a collective action against xAI and SpaceX for nuisance and property value loss.
