Russia Tries to Protect Data Centers from Ukraine Attacks, Subterranean Infrastructure May Be the Answer

Rostelecom is working on creating subterranean data centers with enhanced protection against external threats, following Ukraine's attacks on Russian digital infrastructure.

Rostelecom is negotiating with Nornickel to create a subterranean data center, according to a source close to the negotiations. Another source confirmed Rostelecom’s plans to place data centers underground.

The first level of protection involves creating a backup platform where data copies are stored in case of main infrastructure damage. The second level is associated with distributed architecture, where computing power and services are placed on multiple geographically distant sites. The third level involves the underground placement of data centers, taking into account the most severe threat scenarios, he said.
