Chief Trust Officers Emerge as C-Suite Priority

Rising challenges and risks prompt companies to consider a new leadership role to manage trust and accountability across functions.

The role of the Chief Trust Officer is emerging as a key priority for C-suite executives, as companies face increasing challenges and risks in managing trust and accountability across functions. This new role would involve tracking obligations made to external stakeholders, monitoring whether they are being met, and assigning ownership. The Chief Trust Officer would complement existing roles, such as the CISO, legal counsel, and compliance leadership. The World Economic Forum’s Global Cybersecurity Outlook 2026 found that 87% of respondents identified AI-related vulnerabilities as the fastest-growing cyber risk in 2025. Meanwhile, 65% of large companies by revenue identified third-party and supply-chain vulnerabilities as their greatest challenge. These risks rarely sit within one department, requiring security, legal, procurement, and business teams to work together.

The Digital Personal Data Protection Rules, 2025, in India add another dimension, with implementation following a phased timeline. An organisation may have policies, controls, and compliance processes in place without a consolidated view of whether its commitments are being fulfilled. Governance, risk, and compliance platforms can monitor controls and collect evidence, but cannot independently determine who is accountable when obligations overlap or commitments remain unmet.

The emergence of the Chief Trust Officer does not necessarily mean every organisation will need a dedicated executive in the role. Its adoption may initially be more relevant to businesses managing complex regulatory requirements, multiple vendor relationships, and expanding data obligations. As trust becomes increasingly central to how companies operate, the need for a leadership function that connects these responsibilities is becoming harder to overlook.
