AI wave creates new ICT skills demand in SA
Demand for AI-related skills is soaring in South Africa, according to the 2026 IITPSA ICT Skills Survey.
The survey found that organisations are increasingly adopting AI, with those reporting major ICT skills shortages being among the strongest adopters. This suggests that AI adoption is often a response to talent constraints rather than an alternative to human talent.
To meet the demands of the AI economy, there is a rapid increase in demand for AI engineers, machine learning engineers, and other AI-related professionals, particularly in large enterprises and ICT firms.
The survey also found that ICT practitioners are well aware of AI-driven change and opportunities in the market, and are moving to upskill and work remotely to advance their careers in the AI economy.
