AI App Boom Exposes Cracks in the Code

New app releases have doubled, but research finds widespread security vulnerabilities in AI-generated software.

The rapid growth of AI app use has led to a surge in new app releases, with nearly 1.3 million new iOS and Google Play apps released in the first half of 2026 alone. However, research has found that nine out of 10 AI-generated apps contain at least one security risk. A study on AI coding agents found that those tools frequently produce code with security vulnerabilities, with only 11.8% of solutions generated by one agent being secure. The study evaluated 12 AI coding agents against 186 software development tasks and found that including security warnings to task instructions did little to reduce the risks.
