Women Underrepresented in AI Workforce, Leadership Roles
Women make up only 22% of AI professionals and hold 14% of leadership positions globally.
According to a UN Women report, men occupy nearly eight in ten AI jobs and nine in ten leadership positions guiding this technology. The disparities reflect in women’s participation in the rapidly expanding AI economy, from the workforce to leadership, reinforcing existing asymmetries, the organization notes.
The report also reveals that women have about 20% less likelihood than men of using generative AI tools.
The director of UN Women’s Policies, Programs, and Intergovernmental Support, Sarah Hendricks, emphasizes that half the global talent is not participating in AI’s future, highlighting the need for equal women’s participation to shape, govern, and regulate AI as it remodels economies, societies, and daily life.
