US warned to prepare for economic and labour market disruption from AI

Former US commerce secretary Gina Raimondo warns of AI's potential to disrupt the US economy like the 'China shock'

Speaking at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in New Delhi, Raimondo drew parallels between AI’s potential disruption to American jobs and the past impact of Chinese manufacturing competition on the US labour market.

She cited the ‘China shock’ as an example of an economic transition that was not planned for, leaving millions of Americans out of work and destabilising the country.

Raimondo warned that the US needs to prepare for the potential disruption caused by AI, similar to how it prepared for the impact of Chinese import surge.
