TUM Autoware Research Center by TIER IV Established

TIER IV and Technical University of Munich establish research center for Autoware, an open-source software for autonomous vehicles.

The Technical University of Munich (TUM) and TIER IV have established the TUM Autoware Research Center by TIER IV, a research center focused on Autoware, an open-source software for autonomous vehicles. The center will bring together the expertise of TUM’s three research groups: Chair of Automotive Technology, Professorships of Cyber Physical Systems, and Autonomous Vehicle Systems. The center will focus on research, development, and education in the field of autonomous vehicles, with a focus on safety, evaluation, and expandability.

The research center will be established through funding from TIER IV and will be based on the Autoware software stack. The center will focus on three main areas: safety, evaluation, and expandability. In the safety area, the center will develop a hybrid architecture that combines deep learning-based driving models with rule-based monitoring mechanisms. In the evaluation area, the center will develop a benchmark and testing framework that can be used to evaluate the performance of autonomous vehicles.

The center will also focus on making the Autoware software stack more adaptable to new environments and will establish a process for reusing the results of research and development in open-source projects.
