Symposium Discusses Cybersecurity and Power Outage Protection
Experts from various fields gathered to discuss the vulnerability of the energy supply to cyber attacks and power outages.
The third regional energy technology symposium at the Technical University of Würzburg-Schweinfurt (THWS) focused on the topics of cybersecurity and protection against power outages. The event was organized by the Institute for Energy and High-Voltage Technology (IEHT) of the THWS, the IHK Würzburg-Schweinfurt, and the VDE. The symposium highlighted the importance of technical protection measures, organizational precautions, crisis communication, legal frameworks, and the ability of society, economy, and public institutions to act in an emergency.
Prof. Dr. Jan Schmitt, THWS Vice President for Research and Founding, emphasized the significance of exchange between science, economy, municipalities, and security actors. He noted that the energy supply is a central foundation for almost all areas of social and economic life.
The symposium’s theme is part of a series of previous events, with a focus on ‘Cellular Energy Systems’ in 2024 and ‘Storage in the Energy System’ in 2025. Prof. Dr. Markus H. Zink, IEHT leader and VDE spokesperson for Unterfranken, stated that the energy system’s transformation leads to more decentralized facilities, increased digital networking, and a stronger coupling of the sectors of electricity, heat, and mobility.
