Spanish Data Centers to Cover 80% of Consumption with Renewable Energy

Spanish government requires data centers to cover at least 80% of their consumption with new renewable energy generation.

According to Eusebio Roza, an industrial engineer and software director at SotySolar, the electricity consumption in Spain will increase by at least 34% due to the electrification of homes, transportation, and data centers. Data centers consume energy both day and night, unlike other industries. This is a particularity of data centers, Roza explains.

Some data centers, especially in the US, are self-sufficient with their own gas turbines, which Roza worries could lead to higher gas prices. Small nuclear reactors are also being studied. However, Roza believes that implementing such solutions would be complicated.

Roza advocates for auto-consumption, where households and businesses with solar panels can reduce their reliance on the grid, freeing up capacity for data centers. He also suggests that Spain is lagging behind in implementing domestic battery storage systems, which are more advanced in other countries.
