Spain Becomes New Hub for Data Center Investments

Aragon region in northeastern Spain is attracting over $60 billion in data center investments with its fast-tracked permits.

Aragon region in northeastern Spain is becoming a major digital infrastructure hub in Europe, with over $60 billion in data center investments expected in the next 10 years. The region’s management has implemented a fast-tracked permit system for suitable projects, reducing some approval processes to under 12 months. This has attracted companies like Amazon Web Services and Microsoft, which plan to invest billions of dollars in the region.

The fast-tracked permit system, known as PIGA, allows the region to grant special status to suitable projects, streamlining the planning process and reducing land acquisition times. The region also provides a single point of contact for investors to track their permit applications and receive weekly progress updates.

Amazon Web Services is the largest investor in the region, with plans to invest $33.7 billion in cloud services and artificial intelligence infrastructure. Microsoft is also investing heavily in the region, with a plan to invest up to $10 billion. However, the fast-tracked permit system has raised concerns among experts, who argue that it may compromise public scrutiny of large infrastructure projects.
