San Francisco mall considered for AI datacenter project

A Maryland-based development firm proposes turning the shuttered San Francisco Centre mall into an AI-controlled living space with public spaces and a rooftop garden.

The proposed project would not be a traditional server-based datacenter but a cohesive, community-based AI exhibit, according to Jared Krieger, the chief executive of KG Growth Partners. The project would include culture, design, retail, sports, and education spaces, along with a rooftop park. The majority of the space would remain public facing, supporting the city’s vision for downtown revitalization.

The project may not have a straightforward path to approval, as backlash to datacenters has been rising across the US, and San Francisco has recently implemented a moratorium on datacenter development.

The potential downtown datacenter might be affected by the moratorium, as Krieger said it was ‘fundamentally different from a conventional datacenter’ and would provide public benefits, including a clean energy supply and power recycling.
