Romania to Recognize Cybersecurity Investments in Energy Tariffs

New legislation aims to incentivize cybersecurity investments in Romania's energy sector.

The Romanian government has introduced a new legislative initiative to recognize cybersecurity investments in energy tariffs, according to Mădălin Borș, vice-president of the Committee on Information Technology and Communications. The initiative aims to address the lack of regulation in the energy sector, particularly for producers with less than 1 MW capacity and prosumers. The new legislation will cover not only producers but also transport and distribution operators, as well as the natural gas sector.

The initiative has been extended to include these sectors after parliamentary debates, and the law will introduce the National Cybersecurity Directorate (DNSC) as the competent authority in the energy sector. Operators will need to develop their own cybersecurity strategies, starting from a common model for the energy sector.

The cost of these investments will be reflected in future energy tariffs, and the government aims to encourage operators to invest in cybersecurity to prevent major disruptions to the energy supply and their economic consequences.
