Quebec Government's Tariff Hike Worries Data Center Operators
Hydro-Québec's proposed 91% tariff hike for data centers and cryptocurrency mining facilities has raised concerns among operators.
Hydro-Québec plans to increase the electricity tariff for data centers to 13 ¢/kWh, a 91% hike. For cryptocurrency mining facilities, the tariff could rise from 6.82 ¢/kWh to 19.50 ¢/kWh.
The Association des redistributeurs d’électricité du Québec (AREQ) and its 10 members, including Hydro-Sherbrooke and Hydro-Coaticook, are closely following the issue, as the decision could impact the financial results of municipalities.
The tariff hike has led some cryptocurrency mining companies to consider relocating to data centers, which could result in revenue losses for municipalities with their own hydroelectric services.
