New Mexico Continues to Attract Large Data Center Projects
Despite public opposition, the state's economic development department is encouraging data center development.
New Mexico continues to see an influx of large data center projects, with companies like Oracle and OpenAI building hyperscale facilities in the state. The administration has awarded tax breaks to these projects, including Project Jupiter, which is also receiving support from the state’s Job-Training Incentive Program. The state’s economic development department is encouraging data center development, citing the state’s research institutions and innovation economy as attractions for companies.
However, public opposition remains a concern, with 65% of respondents in a September Journal Poll opposing the development of large data centers in the state. Despite this, the state’s economic development department is moving forward with plans to support data center development, including a proposal for an information park in Roswell that would include a data center and power generation.
The information park, proposed by E2B4, a privately held data center developer, would include 700 megawatts of natural-gas power to be ready for commercial data center operations in 2028, with plans to eventually transition to small modular nuclear reactors for power.
