Microsoft CEO Warns AI Lacks Fewer Rules Than Milk

Microsoft CEO Brad Smith says AI is simultaneously a tool and a weapon that urgently needs clear regulations.

Microsoft CEO Brad Smith has warned that AI is simultaneously a tool and a weapon that urgently needs clear regulations. He believes it is unacceptable for the most advanced technology to be developed without a basic security standard.

Smith pointed out that AI currently falls under fewer regulations than ordinary milk or a trash can, and that security rules for new technology are needed. He proposed the introduction of so-called emergency brakes for critical situations, which would allow companies to slow down or completely stop AI systems if they get out of control.

The Microsoft CEO also emphasized the need for a legal obligation to write incident reports. If a rogue AI agent breaches someone’s system, companies should notify the victim instead of resolving the problem in secret, and external government evaluators should approve products before they reach consumers.
