Microsoft and Constellation Energy Revive Three Mile Island Nuclear Power Plant
The plant, which has a capacity of 835 MW, is expected to provide clean energy to Microsoft's data centers.
The project, now called the Crane Clean Energy Center, is a revival of the Three Mile Island Unit 1, which was shut down in 2019 due to economic reasons and competition in the natural gas market. The plant is a Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) type, using high-pressure water as a coolant and neutron absorber. The revival of this traditional nuclear technology plant reflects the massive energy demand from AI data centers, which can change the economic value of retired energy infrastructure.
Microsoft has signed a 20-year power purchase agreement with Constellation Energy to support the plant’s upgrade and revival. The original plan was to start operations in 2028, but the companies have accelerated the timeline to 2027, reflecting significant progress in engineering and licensing processes.
