Malaysia's Data Center Expansion May Strain Electricity Supply

A new data center expansion in Malaysia may put a strain on the country's electricity supply, particularly in the state of Johor.

According to a report by BMI Country Risk and Industry Research, the expansion of data centers in Malaysia is expected to increase the demand for electricity, particularly in the state of Johor. The new data centers are expected to require around 30 terawatt-hours of electricity per year by 2031, which is a 6% increase from the total electricity consumption in the region in 2026.

This increased demand is expected to exceed 90% of the total increase in electricity production in the region during the same period, highlighting the strain on the electricity supply.

The report also notes that the region’s limited access to hydroelectric power and the slow development of its power grid infrastructure may exacerbate the issue.
