Island's Data Centers Consume 3.5-6% of Country's Electricity
Island's unique geothermal energy resources attract data centers, but raise concerns about energy consumption and competition with other industries.
The island’s data centers, which have been growing rapidly, consume between 3.5% and 6% of the country’s electricity, according to Styrmir Hafliðason, director of Verne, a British company with a large data center in Iceland.
The company’s data center, which spans 16 hectares near Keflavik airport, is one of the largest in the country and uses geothermal energy to power its operations.
However, the growth of data centers has raised concerns about energy consumption and competition with other industries, such as agriculture, which relies heavily on electricity for lighting and heating in greenhouses.
