INEC Integrates AI Tools for 2027 Elections Amid Unfinished Governance Framework
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is adding AI to its election result verification process, but the policy governing its use remains unfinished.
The tools are being built into results verification, with mandatory human oversight under a five-pillar governance framework. The framework is still being finalised, according to INEC chairman Joash Amupitan. The AI tools are meant to flag inconsistencies for officials to examine, and will not independently determine election results.
The process digitises polling unit result forms, pulls data from scanned copies of Form EC8A, and compares it with the records held in BVAS. Differences are flagged for officials to review before results are published. The system does not alter results, according to Amupitan.
INEC is also using AI for cybersecurity, monitoring database traffic and shielding its portals from intrusion and unauthorised alteration, with international technology partners.
