INEC Creates AI Division to Verify Results, Curb Fake News, and Strengthen BVAS Software
Nigeria's electoral commission establishes AI division to combat deepfakes, synthetic misinformation, and strengthen election software.
The new unit is tasked with verifying election results in real-time, combatting synthetic misinformation and deepfakes, and upgrading the software powering the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS).
The AI tools will operate under a strict ‘five-pillar AI governance framework’ featuring mandatory human oversight, and will flag suspicious submissions for human review before official collation.
The commission is collaborating with international technology partners and global cybersecurity firms to strengthen these tools and counter coordinated disinformation campaigns.
