IMF and OECD Warn: AI May Further Widen Gap Between Rich and Poor Countries

Economists question who will benefit most from massive investments in AI, data centers, and computer infrastructure.

Developed countries, which already have strong technological infrastructure, educated workforces, and capital for new investments, have a significant advantage in harnessing the economic potential of AI over poorer countries.

The IMF estimates that successful AI implementation in the medium term could increase global economic growth by up to 0.5 percentage points per year, while the OECD predicts that the new technology could boost annual productivity growth in member countries by an additional 0.4 to 1.2 percentage points.

However, experts warn that the expected economic benefits are only partially realized so far, and that the adoption of AI is a complex process that requires reliable electricity supply, high-quality internet infrastructure, digitalization investments, and workers who can use new technologies.
