Google's Finnish Data Center Faces Environmental Investigation
Finnish authorities investigate allegations of environmental breaches at a Google data center construction site.
The Finnish police have launched a criminal investigation into suspected environmental law breaches at a data center construction site operated by Tuike Finland, a subsidiary of Google. The site is located near the town of Muonio. The investigation focuses on water management and drainage issues. The police stated that preliminary information suggests that there were discrepancies and shortcomings in water management and drainage at the site. The investigation will examine the circumstances surrounding these issues. The Environmental Protection Agency had previously ordered Google to halt preparatory work that was altering the environment at the Muonio site and another location. Google had announced that it had begun preliminary work based on its own understanding of the required permits under Finnish law. The Finnish government has been promoting the country as a hub for data center investments, citing its cold climate, low-carbon electricity, and government support for artificial intelligence projects. The Google project is part of a 15 billion dollar investment plan in Finnish infrastructure for artificial intelligence. The project is the largest investment in Europe, according to Google. The Finnish government has expressed support for the Google project, with Prime Minister Petteri Orpo stating that the agreement would boost the economy, downplaying concerns that it would consume large amounts of energy and drive up electricity prices.
