Google's Data Center Project in Finland Sparks Debate Over Environmental Impact
Google's data center investment in Finland has led to deforestation, affecting local wildlife and prompting concerns over the environmental impact of tech infrastructure.
The deforestation of approximately 1,300 acres of forestland in Finland for Google’s data center project has raised concerns over the environmental impact of tech infrastructure. The project has led to a decline in wildlife habitats, causing animals to migrate to nearby settlements in search of food. The Guardian’s investigation revealed that the cleared forestland has been transformed into muddy areas and wood debris, disrupting the local food chain.
Residents in the nearby Otanmaki settlement have reported an increase in wolf sightings, with some families considering leaving the area due to the changing environment. Anni Ranta, a 53-year-old resident, stated that the wolves are now approaching the settlement in search of food, a consequence of the deforestation.
The issue is not unique to Finland, with similar concerns raised over data center projects in the US. In West Virginia, a forest area home to the critically endangered American chestnut tree is threatened by a planned data center facility, while in Indiana, a wetland area is being converted into farmland for a new Google data center project.
