Google's $15 billion data center in India sparks environmental concerns
The tech giant's massive data center in Visakhapatnam, India, promises jobs and economic growth, but locals worry about water and energy consumption.
The Google data center, set to be the company’s largest outside the US, will have a capacity of one gigawatt and cover over 340 football fields. The project has been welcomed by the Indian government, but locals are concerned about the impact on the environment and their daily lives.
Environmental groups have called for a halt to the construction of the data center until independent assessments of its social and environmental impacts are conducted. They also question the number of jobs the project will create.
Google has promised to use advanced air-cooling systems to reduce water consumption and has committed to investing in clean energy projects. The company claims the data center will have a $688 million annual impact on the local economy and create 4,200 jobs during construction.
