Google Restricts Free Gemini Users to Flash-Lite Model
Starting October 9, free users will be locked into the Flash-Lite model, while entry-level paid accounts will be restricted to the Flash model.
The update will fundamentally shift how the chatbot handles complex tasks for everyday users, with free users no longer able to select the Gemini Flash or Gemini Pro models without a premium subscription.
The restriction of the Pro model to the $20-a-month AI Pro tier will heavily impact users who rely on Gemini for advanced reasoning, such as students, researchers, and developers.
Google is also introducing a new computational toggle feature called ’effort levels,’ which allows users to dictate how much processing power the AI dedicates to a specific prompt.
