Google Faces Backlash in Finland Over Illegal Tree Felling for Data Center

Google has been ordered to stop work on a data center project in Finland after it was found to have illegally cleared over 25 million trees.

The project, which is part of Google’s 13 billion euro investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure, has been met with widespread criticism and protests in Finland.

The country’s Prime Minister, Petteri Orpo, has described the incident as a ‘cold shower’ and has raised questions about the country’s willingness to accept data center projects without proper environmental assessments.

Local residents have expressed concerns about the impact of the project on the environment and their way of life, including the potential for noise pollution and the risk of the data center becoming a target for Russian aggression.
