French Author Creates Comic Book with Artificial Intelligence
Alexandre Beaumarchais uses AI to create the first comic book in France with artificial intelligence-assisted illustrations.
Alexandre Beaumarchais, a 51-year-old author from Domfront, has created a comic book about the history of Domfront using artificial intelligence-assisted illustrations. The project began after Beaumarchais realized that there was no comic book about the history of his hometown. He spent 15 months researching and writing the script, consulting with local historians and experts. The comic book follows two children who learn about the history of Domfront from a wise old sage. Beaumarchais plans to release the first album in 2027, with the second volume to follow. The use of AI in the comic book is a first in France, and Beaumarchais hopes to return to traditional illustration methods in the future. The AI-assisted illustrations are created by providing the AI with detailed descriptions of the scene, characters, and dialogue, and then refining the output to achieve the desired style and effect. Beaumarchais has been working on the project despite being diagnosed with the rare Kleine-Levin syndrome, which causes periods of lethargy and sleepiness. He has been unable to leave his home in La Baroche-sous-Lucé since 2015, but has continued to work on the comic book using the AI tool. The project is a testament to Beaumarchais’ creativity and determination, and the potential of AI in the creative process.
