EU Data Centers Face Crisis as Cloud Market Share Drops

EU data center market share drops to 15% in 2022 from 29% in 2017, prompting crisis concerns.

The European data center market is facing a crisis, with the market share of EU-based companies dropping to 15% in 2022 from 29% in 2017, according to Steen Glov, representative of the Dutch Data Center Association.

The association’s data shows that the five major cities in Europe, known as FLAP-D (Frankfurt, London, Amsterdam, Paris, and Dublin), have seen their data center capacity increase from 1.8GW in 2019 to 3.8GW in 2026, with available capacity dropping to an average of 7%.

The European data center market is expected to see a significant increase in power consumption, from 70TWh in 2024 to 115TWh in 2030, with data centers accounting for approximately 10% of the EU’s total power demand increase.
