Estonia's Planned Data Centers Threaten to Drive Up Electricity Prices
Elering has received applications for 2900 megawatts of data center connections, nearly three times Estonia's average electricity consumption.
The applications are for connections to the grid, not for the data centers themselves, which are planned to be built in the coming years.
While most of the projects may not come to fruition, experts warn that the addition of large new consumers without sufficient production capacity could drive up electricity prices and increase Estonia’s dependence on imports.
Estonia’s IT sector is growing rapidly, and data centers are becoming a major driver of this growth, with plans to build hundreds of megawatts of capacity in the coming years.
