Cyberattack on supermarket refrigeration systems causes food destruction and supply chain disruption

A massive cyberattack on supermarket refrigeration systems has led to the destruction of tonnes of food and supply chain disruption.

The attack, which occurred on Sunday night, targeted hundreds of supermarket refrigeration systems, with smaller-scale replicas occurring 24 hours later.

The attackers did not demand ransom or steal large amounts of data, but instead used the systems’ remote maintenance features to artificially raise the temperature of the freezers to extreme levels.

This caused the destruction of tonnes of food and disrupted the supply chain, resulting in millions of euros in losses.
