Companies Struggle to Govern AI as It Spreads Across Operations

As AI adoption accelerates, companies face challenges in defining AI's autonomy, responsibilities, and human controls.

The rapid expansion of AI in companies poses a challenge: defining the limits of autonomy, responsibilities, and human controls. This disconnection between adoption and governance is one of the main challenges of this stage. AI accelerates decisions that previously had clearly identified responsible individuals.

Companies govern when they define who can do what, with what level of autonomy, and under what responsibility. AI forces companies to transfer these questions to systems that start to intervene in increasingly relevant business processes. In any organization, there are permissions, approval levels, and responsibilities because the ability to act also implies the possibility of generating consequences.

As AI functions mainly as an assistance tool, the disorder is easier to contain. However, agents change this logic: they can consult sources, choose between different actions, modify information, or initiate processes without requiring human intervention for each step. This forces companies to define with greater precision the level of autonomy a system can have within an organization.
