Cable Production Capacity Constrains AI Data Center Construction
Cable production capacity is becoming a constraint for the construction of AI data centers, according to Nexans CFO.
The construction of AI data centers is being constrained by the production capacity of cables, according to Nexans CFO, Pascal Picq. The industry’s ability to expand production capacity is not keeping pace with growing demand.
Picq noted that the global production capacity of cables is under pressure, and that it takes around three years to set up a new production line for XLPE cables, which are known as CV lines in the industry. This limits the ability of suppliers to quickly respond to demand.
The strain on power infrastructure is already causing delays in some projects, with Oracle notifying Blue Owl, a US investment company, that it may not be able to secure the necessary power for a large data center project in New Mexico in September.
