Businesses Are Spending Billions on AI Infrastructure

Companies are committing substantial capital to AI infrastructure, but the costs are not always matching the promises of productivity and savings.

The cost of AI begins long before a company deploys a chatbot or automates a workflow. Behind these services sits an enormous network of data centres, specialised chips, memory equipment and electricity infrastructure.

Meta, Amazon, Microsoft and Google parent Alphabet are expected to spend approximately $750 billion on capital expenditure in 2026, much of it directed towards AI infrastructure.

The rapid expansion is also increasing pressure on supply chains, with prices for some memory used in data centres rising more than fivefold in a year.
