AWS Pledges $1 Billion to Data Center Host Communities
Amazon Web Services to invest over $1 billion in communities where it builds data centers over the next five years.
The investment is part of AWS’s new Data Center Commitment, which aims to address growing local opposition to data center construction across the United States. The company has also stopped requiring local governments to sign nondisclosure agreements about its projects. AWS will fund free community college degrees and trades training, as well as energy-efficiency upgrades for schools and homes, through its Built Together program.
The company has faced criticism over its use of secrecy agreements with local officials, but has now ended this practice. AWS has also pledged to publish annual figures on energy and water use at its facilities, and has stated that its data centers will not drive up local electricity bills for residents.
The investment is a response to growing public skepticism about the rapid buildout of AI infrastructure nationwide, and comes as over 100 data center moratoriums are being considered across the country.
