Artificial Intelligence Threatens Young People's Job Prospects

Young graduates face a shrinking job market as AI takes over tasks.

When Robert Mars graduated in computer science in 2022, his skills were in high demand, and he could easily get a job anywhere. Today, however, finding a job has become a constant and exhausting struggle. “Everything around us is being turned upside down,” says the 26-year-old software engineer from Pennsylvania. “In most interviews, employers’ underlying attitude is: ‘Do we really need them?’”, he explains.

The consequences of a new industrial revolution are being felt by Mars and many others, as AI gradually sweeps the job market. According to the Financial Times, job opportunities for young people in sectors directly affected by automation are starting to dwindle. The result is many recent graduates feeling disappointed and angry.

Despite the predicted “Armageddon” of job losses, the new technology is rapidly absorbing a massive volume of tasks that, in the past, would have been assigned to young employees as their first step on the career ladder. “I feel like my prospects are being stolen by a closed, elite group of the richest and most intelligent people on the planet,” says Mars with bitterness.
