Apple Tightens App Store Rules to Ban AI Nudify Apps
Apple updates App Store guidelines to prohibit AI-generated content that conceals harmful features until after review.
The changes strengthen Apple’s requirements for AI-generated content, user-generated material and app transparency. The company says developers must implement safeguards against objectionable content and cannot misrepresent an app’s purpose during review before activating harmful features after approval.
The update comes amid growing scrutiny of so-called nudify apps, which use AI to create fake nude images of people, often without their consent. Apple and Google have faced pressure from regulators and advocacy groups over the availability of such tools through their app stores.
Apple also said it would remove apps that introduce features not included in the version submitted for review, and reinforced its rules for apps that host user-generated content, requiring them to filter objectionable material and provide reporting mechanisms.
