Amazon Abandons $427 Million Virginia Data Center Campus Due to Local Opposition

Amazon cancels its plan to build a four-building data center complex in Ashburn, Virginia, after facing backlash from residents and the county board of supervisors.

Amazon is walking away from a $427 million deal to build a four-building, 800,000-square-foot data center complex on a 122-acre campus in Ashburn, Virginia, after facing opposition from local residents and the county board of supervisors.

The company will instead dedicate 25 acres of the site to a community arts center and an indoor sports facility, and will seek to rezone the rest of the property for mixed-use development.

This decision marks a notable retreat for Amazon, which is spending more on AI infrastructure than ever, with a 2026 capital expenditure guidance of $220 billion.
