AI Tools Used to Spread Misinformation in South African Elections

Experts warn that low-cost AI tools are being used to deceive large numbers of people in the country's municipal elections.

The Centre for Analytics and Behavioural Change has identified six commonly used AI tools that can create convincing synthetic media, including AI-generated videos and cloned voices.

These tools can be used to deceive people by creating fake endorsements, leaked voice notes, or poll results styled as TV news.

To counter these threats, the CABC monitors for cloned voices or fake posts, verifies sources through cross-checking, and engages directly with harmful content using facts.
