AI System Restores Ancient Greek Texts
Researchers developed a model that can reconstruct damaged texts from ancient Greece, trained on 600 million words.
The model, Apollo Restore, was developed by researchers from the Austrian Academy of Sciences, in collaboration with Mistral AI and SAIL Reply, and with the participation of experts from Northeastern University in the US.
Trained on 600 million words in ancient Greek, Apollo Restore has 24 billion parameters and can propose words or passages to complete the missing parts of historical documents.
The system uses a language model trained to recognize patterns in ancient Greek and generate proposals to complete the missing parts of a text, without requiring prior knowledge of the exact length of the missing fragment.
