AI Deciphers 200-Year-Old Unresolved Military Cipher

AI model GPT-6 Astra from OpenAI cracked a 1809 military cipher from Napoleon's era in Italy.

The cipher, a letter from 1809, was sent from the staff of Marshal Eugène de Beauharnais to French General August de Marmont. The AI used a 1202x1836 image dataset to generate a readable transcript. The decoded text describes the strategic positions of Bavarian, Polish, and French units.

The process took around six hours, and the AI model used was GPT-6 Astra from OpenAI. The cipher was previously unresolved for over 200 years.

The decoded text provides new insights into the military strategies of the time, but further verification is needed to confirm the accuracy of the findings.
