2.26 billion Data Center BBU/ CBU units expected by 2031

Market research firm Fuji Keizai predicts a 3.4-fold increase in BBU/ CBU units by 2031.

BBU/ CBU units are backup power sources for servers, providing short-term backup and peak cutting for individual racks. They are essential for AI servers, which experience extreme power load fluctuations due to large-scale computations and repeated idle periods. Central UPS systems cannot respond to these fluctuations in microseconds to milliseconds, making server-level charge-discharge control necessary. As AI data center investments expand, the demand for BBU/ CBU units is increasing.

In 2025, the market for BBU units reached 67 million units, while CBU units are expected to gain traction from 2024 onwards, with the market still in its infancy. BBU units are driving the market, but the adoption of CBU units is expected to increase as next-generation GPUs are used in AI servers, which require CBU units’ strengths in lifespan and charge-discharge speed. By 2028, CBU units are expected to expand rapidly.

The demand for BBU/ CBU units is expected to continue growing as AI data center development advances, with the market predicted to reach 2.26 billion units by 2031, a 3.4-fold increase from 2025.
