UK's Heata Installs Servers in Homes to Convert Excess Cloud Computing Heat into Free Hot Water
Heata's system uses servers to warm homes while processing data for companies, reducing energy costs for families.
The system uses a device that attaches to a home’s water heater and transfers heat from the server to the water. The server can be used remotely for tasks like scientific calculations or digital image creation, and the family doesn’t need to use the computer. The company estimates that the device can cover around 80% of a household’s usual hot water needs.
Heata pays for the electricity consumed by the server, so the family doesn’t incur that cost. According to the company’s calculations, the annual savings can reach £120 for gas-heated homes and £340 for electric-heated homes. However, the system is not compatible with all types of water heaters and requires internet connectivity.
Heata has already tested the installation with British Gas technicians and is looking for interested households to host the servers. While the system doesn’t eliminate the energy consumption of cloud computing, it allows the same energy to be used for two tasks instead of being wasted.
